Canary seed (pointed seed, gloss)
Canary seed, also called gloss or pointed seed, is a popular and healthy seed that is often used in the diets of rodents and birds. The seeds come from a certain grass species called common panicle (Phalaris canariensis). The panicle consists of small, shiny seeds that are rich in nutrients.

For rodents such as dwarf hamsters, golden hamsters, teddy hamsters, rats, coloured mice, gerbils, chinchillas and degus, canary seed is a good source of various nutrients. The seeds contain proteins, fats and carbohydrates which are important to support their energy and health.

For guinea pigs and rabbits, canary seed is also a welcome supplement, although these animals mainly need hay, fresh vegetables and species-appropriate, grain-free food mixes to ensure a balanced diet. Seed should be fed in moderation as it has a higher fat content compared to other foods.

For birds like parrots and parakeets, such as budgies, cockatiels, agapornids and sparrow parrots, canary seeds are a popular choice. They provide a good source of essential fatty acids, protein and vitamins. The minerals and vitamins in canary seed can vary depending on the growing conditions, quality and source of the seed.

For finches, such as zebra finches, canaries or amadines, canary seed is virtually a must. It is eagerly eaten by the little ones and serves as a basis for many feed mixtures.

In general, however, they contain a number of important nutrients, including:

  • Proteins: Support growth, repair and renewal of tissues.
  • Fats: Provide energy and essential fatty acids important for skin and plumage health.
  • Carbohydrates: Provide energy and are an important source of glucose. Calcium: Important for bone and teeth health.
  • Iron: Contributes to the formation of haemoglobin and is important for oxygen transport in the body.
  • Vitamin A: Supports vision and the immune system.
  • Vitamin D: Helps absorb calcium and plays a role in bone formation.
  • Vitamin E: An antioxidant that protects cells from damage.
  • B vitamins: Contain various B vitamins such as B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B9 and B12, which are important for metabolism and the nervous system.
When feeding canary seed (gloss, pointed seed) it is important to give it in appropriate amounts as part of a balanced diet. On its own it should not be the main source of food, but rather as part of a good feed mix. A varied diet is key to ensuring that animals get all the nutrients they need. Fresh water should always be available. Please note that the needs of animals can vary depending on species and age. If you are unsure about the best diet for your animals, consult a veterinarian or pet food expert.
