Celery stalks
Celery stalks are the long, fibrous stalks of celery, a type of vegetable with crunchy green stalks and a characteristic flavour. They are rich in fibre, vitamins and minerals and are often used as a healthy addition to the diet of small rodents and rabbits.
For small rodents such as guinea pigs, chinchillas and degus, celery stalks are a good source of fibre, which helps to support healthy digestion. The fibres in the stalks promote bowel movement and help prevent constipation. In addition, celery stalks also contain vitamins such as vitamin C, which is particularly important for guinea pigs as they cannot produce it themselves.
Rabbits, including dwarf rabbits and ram rabbits, also benefit from celery stalks in their diet. The fibres help to support dental health as chewing on the fibrous stalks promotes tooth abrasion, reducing the risk of dental problems. Rabbits also benefit from the vitamins and minerals it contains, especially vitamin C.
However, it is important to note that celery stalks should only be used as a supplementary food and not as the main food for small rodents and rabbits. A balanced diet for these animals consists of a mixture of fresh hay, vegetables, herbs and occasional fruit snacks.
Celery stalks can be offered as part of this varied diet, but should not be fed excessively or in large quantities as this can lead to digestive problems. It is advisable to introduce celery stalks in small portions and pay attention to the animal's reaction.
