Horsetail

Horsetail , also known as field horsetail or Equisetum arvense, is a plant found in many regions of the world. It is a perennial herbaceous plant characterised by its small size and distinctive hollow stems with thin green branches.

In terms of the diet of guinea pigs, chinchillas, degus and rabbits, horsetail plays an important role. It contains a variety of nutrients that can be beneficial to these rodents. Tinweed is rich in minerals such as calcium, potassium, magnesium and silica. It also contains small amounts of vitamins, especially vitamin C.

For guinea pigs , vitamin C is an essential source of nutrients as they are unable to produce it themselves. Horsetail can be a good source of vitamin C for guinea pigs, but it is important to note that the vitamin C content can vary depending on the plant location and growing conditions.

For chinchillas, degus and rabbits, horsetail is a high-fibre plant that can help promote healthy digestion. It can also help to support tooth wear, as chewing the hard stems and twigs encourages natural tooth wear.

However, it is important to feed horsetail in moderation. Due to the high content of silicic acid, excessive consumption of horsetail can cause problems in some animals. It is recommended to offer horsetail as part of a balanced diet and not to use it as a main food source.
