Rowan berries

Dried rowan berries, also known as mountain ash berries, are the fruits of the mountain ash tree (Sorbus aucuparia). The rowan tree is native to Europe and parts of Asia. The berries are about the size of a pea, bright red or orange and have a slightly sour taste.

In terms of food for small rodents and birds, dried rowan berries have some importance. They are an important food source for many bird species, especially in winter when other food sources are scarce. Birds such as thrushes, blackbirds, starlings and finches feed on the berries as they are rich in carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals. Our pet birds such as budgies, cockatiels, agapornids, pink cockatoos, sparrow parrots, parrots, finches such as zebra finches, gouldamadins and canaries also love these fruits.

Small rodents such as hamsters, mice, rats, degus and chinchillas and also squirrels can also benefit from the dried rowan berries. They are an additional food source that provides them with energy. However, rowan berries are toxic to some species if eaten fresh and unprocessed.

However, the drying process breaks down the toxic substances, making the dried berries safe for small rodents. It is important to note that the diet of small rodents and birds should not be based exclusively on dried rowan berries. A varied diet with other natural food sources such as seeds, fruits, insects and nuts is necessary for healthy development and maintenance of the animals.
