Carob, broken

Carob is the fruit of the carob tree, which is native to Mediterranean regions. The fruit is also known as Johannisbrot or locust bean gum and has a long history as a food and feed. It is important to note that carob can have different dietary effects and meanings for different small rodents and rabbits.

For guinea pigs, chinchillas, degus, rabbits (including dwarf rabbits and rams) and rats and mice, carob has a not insignificant place in the diet. It is found in many ready-made rodent mixes. Carob can be given occasionally as a treat in small amounts, but should not be the main source of their diet.

It contains fibre and some protein, but it should not be fed excessively as it is also relatively high in sugar. It is also suitable for golden hamsters in small quantities as it can provide them with extra fibre and energy. However, it is still important to ensure that hamsters receive a balanced diet consisting of species-appropriate hamster food.

Carob should only be given in moderation. In general, when feeding carob to small rodents and rabbits, the amount of sugar and the total amount should be kept in mind. Excessive sugar consumption can lead to digestive problems, weight gain and other health problems.

It is recommended to limit the feeding of carob to small amounts and not to use it as a main component of the diet.
