The diet and care of guinea pigs

Guinea pigs are herbivorous animals that need a species-appropriate and balanced diet to stay healthy.
The wild guinea pig lives in the Andes, the mountains of Peru in sparse but quite humid areas. Mainly they feed there on grasses. However, they also eat various herbs as well as bark, twigs and their leaves and plant roots. Guinea pigs are visually very different from their wild form, but their digestion still works on the same principle. Their diet and nutrition still resemble those of their relatives. Guinea pigs have a thin-walled stomach and a very long intestine. Their digestion can only work if they eat constantly, taking in plenty of raw fiber in the form of herbs or flowers, and meals are spread throughout the day. The teeth in guinea pigs grow permanently and require constant abrasion. Meals of fresh green food should definitely be given throughout the day. A selective intake of fresh green food can lead to faulty fermentation in the intestines and cause health problems for the animal.

The health and hygiene of guinea pigs

The health and hygiene of guinea pigs is very important to ensure that these animals can live a happy and healthy life. Make sure the run is clean and that the enclosure is cleaned regularly. Remove feces and urine daily and change the bedding completely at least once a week. Of course, keeping them healthy also includes feeding them a diet appropriate to their species. As described above, they need plenty of hay, herbs and flowers, but also fresh food. If something should not be right with the little ones, bring them to the vet to avoid further bad consequences. Guinea pigs also need grooming. Especially breeds like longhaired guinea pigs have longer fur, which should be brushed. This way you avoid tangles and it stays clean longer. Guinea pigs are social animals and need regular social interaction. Make sure they live with other guinea pigs. This is the only way to make sure they stay happy and healthy.

The different breeds of guinea pigs

Guinea pigs are popular pets because of their cute appearance and friendly nature. There are many different breeds of guinea pigs, each with its own unique characteristics.

The best known breed is the short-haired guinea pig, also known as the English guinea pig. This breed has smooth, short fur and a wide range of colors and patterns that can range from black to white.

Another popular breed is the long-haired guinea pig, also known as the Peruvian guinea pig. This breed has long, silky fur that can grow up to 25 inches long. It requires a lot of grooming to keep the coat clean and trimmed, but it is a pretty breed.

The Rex guinea pig has a curly coat and is known for its soft texture. This breed comes in many different colors and is very popular among guinea pig lovers for its unique appearance.

The Skinny Guinea Pig is a breed without hair and has smooth, soft skin. Although popular with many people for its unique appearance, this breed requires special care to protect its sensitive skin from sunburn and other skin problems.

Other popular breeds of guinea pigs include the Teddy guinea pig, the Merino guinea pig, and the Coronet guinea pig. Each of these breeds has its own special features and characteristics that make them unique.

The correct care of guinea pigs

If you get a guinea pig, you must also decide to provide the animals with a large and species-appropriate habitat. Guinea pigs make a frugal impression even on the smallest habitat. But the impression is deceptive. It should be clear to every owner that even hogs like to run or even jump a lot. Guinea pigs also have the peculiarity not to like to share their sleeping place with conspecifics and they insist on their privacy. Guinea pigs may also be kept outside, but they should be accustomed to being kept outside in the summer. Of course, no guinea pig should be kept alone, this should be understood by itself. For winter outside keeping a group should count at least four animals. Then they can warm each other or the shelter better. A daily short health check is mandatory for outdoor keeping.

Tips for the acquisition of guinea pigs

If you are thinking about getting guinea pigs as pets, there are some important things to consider. The guinea pigs need for their attitude, as already mentioned, a lot of space in the enclosure. For each guinea pig half a square meter of floor space should be planned but 3m² should never be undercut. Guinea pigs always need conspecifics, the more the better. They are not animals that you can just feed and forget about. They need daily care and attention. Cleaning and fresh bedding are also important. Overall, guinea pigs are lovable and fun pets, but they also require a lot of responsibility and commitment.
