The macaw, a profile

The macaw is one of the most famous parrots in the world.
It is native to South and Central America, where it prefers to live in forest zones, swamp and riverine regions. Besides the rainforests, the macaw also prefers dry hilly and lowland areas of the Pacific coast and thorn bush areas with single trees. With only 33cm the Dwarf Macaw is the true "dwarf" of its species. The Hyacinth Macaw with nearly 1m length is the "giant". The Light Red Macaw, Blue-breasted Macaw and Yellow-breasted Macaw are just behind with 85cm. The weight of the macaws ranges from 750g to 1300g. According to today's knowledge there are 16 different species. These include the Spix's Macaw, Hyacinth Macaw, Lear's Macaw, Dark Red Macaw and Light Red Macaw as well as the Blue-breasted Macaw, Yellow-breasted Macaw and Red-eared Macaw. Furthermore, the small and large Sodate Macaw, the Red Bug Macaw, the Mountain Macaw, Yellow-naped Macaw, Red-backed Macaw, Red-bellied Macaw and Dwarf Macaw belong to them. The best known of these, however, are the Blue-breasted Macaw, Yellow-breasted Macaw and Light-breasted Macaw. Many macaw species are threatened with extinction. The reasons for this are the clearing of the rainforest, the hunting for these parrots, as well as the capture and trade worldwide.

The attitude of macaws

For many people, the macaw is the parrot par excellence. Thanks to its imposing size and intelligence, its nature and unique colors, it attracts the interest of many people. Before acquiring this fascinating creature, however, you should take some things into consideration, because the macaw will live for 60 to 80 years and can therefore outlive you. Since the macaw also belongs to the very noisy parrots, a conversation should be held with the neighbors beforehand. Because of its enormous size it also needs a lot of space. In order to be able to hold it kind-fairly the daily free flight of 2-3 hours must be ensured. A city apartment is not a species-appropriate accommodation for this type of pet. If therefore a garden with a very large aviary must her to ensure a sufficient habitat. So it should be carefully considered whether the attitude of these parrots comes into question.

The diet of the macaw

All species of macaws feed mainly on fruits and berries, vegetables, seeds and flowers. They also eat nuts, insects and their larvae. Besides our species-appropriate food for parrots, we also offer sprouted food and cooked food. To the general occupation also panicle millet and grain ears contribute, which are dissected with pleasure meticulously. In general, fish food and water should always be given to them.

The cockatoo, a special bird

To see a cockatoo, Europeans have to travel a long way.
Cockatoos can be found in countries like Australia, Indonesia or the Philippines. Indeed, a tropical climate is preferred by cockatoos. In the big cities of Australia cockatoos can also be found. The parrots have developed the urban habitat there. On eucalyptus trees cockatoos like to set up their nesting sites. Due to a very smooth trunk this tree offers a high security that the offspring will not be killed by predators. The feathered cap is the trademark of the cockatoo. There are a total of 6 different genera with 21 species. In Australia, the cockatoo can often be seen in very large flocks of several hundreds to thousands of parrots. The life expectancy of cockatoos is very high and even in the wild they have hardly any enemies. So it is not surprising that a yellow-crested cockatoo in a zoo in London lived to be a whopping 82 years old! The adaptive and intelligent cockatoos can easily learn to speak and are also absolute masters at imitating various sounds.

How to hold a cockatoo ?

After all, you can not keep a cockatoo alone!

Who once in ruhe the behavior of these fascinating parrots has observed, which had to determine that cockatoos are very social animals, which come together in large groups. As with most parrots, he also lives with his partner for life together. Since cockatoos also like to visit playgrounds in the wild, you should also offer him enough employment at home to meet the natural urge. Who would like to hold a cockatoo species-appropriate as a domestic animal, must think for a good attitude not only of an appropriately large aviary, but likewise to hold at least two animals. Likewise, a cockatoo needs a lot of attention and a lot of free flight. The loud whistling and screaming should be discussed with the neighbor beforehand. The voice of the cockatoo can be very exhausting. Nibbling on furniture can be stopped by giving toys or germ food. Employment is the magic word. Spikes & ears of corn to shred would also be an idea. A good and species-appropriate food is important to ensure an optimal diet for the cockatoos. Plenty of vegetables and fruits, as well as nuts belong to a balanced diet. The food from the pet trade is not animal-friendly and also does not correspond to the species-appropriate nutrition of a cockatoo.
