What are color rats actually?

Color rats are a specially domesticated species of rat
which is kept as a pet. They are known for their variety of colors and fur patterns. Unlike wild rats, which are gray or brown, color rats can be almost any color, including black, white, beige, brown, gray, red, blue and more. Color rats are usually smaller than their wild relatives. They are cute, intelligent and lovable. History and Origin of Color Rats Color rats originated in China, where they were kept as pets and farm animals. It wasn't until the 1800s that they were bred in Europe and became very popular as pets. Then in the 19th century, color rats were bred in the United States to control rat populations. These color rats were kept as pets and were given the name Fancy Rat. Over the years, the color rats became more popular and a separate breeding line was created. Then in the 1990's many different color rats came into our trade. There was a wide range of colors and fur patterns and so the triumph of the color rat as a pet took its course.

Buy good rat food!

We advise you to buy the best rat food from us, because the most important ingredient in the color rat diet is the species-appropriate rat food. An adult rat needs about one tablespoon of food per day. If the rat food is eaten without being stored by the rat, you can give more. If it is the other way around, i.e. the rat eats a lot of food or only the favorite food, you should feed less. You cannot buy good and healthy rat food in pet shops. Our selected food for color rats, correspond to a species-appropriate diet and offer with the animal protein an all-round care of the animals. That's why you should buy rat food from us!

Establishment of the enclosure for color rats

A suitable facility for color rats should be designed so that the animals have enough space to run and exercise their urge to move. For optimal keeping and suitable accommodation would be an aviary or self-build. For a smaller group of five animals, a size of 150 x 100 x 180cm is suitable. If the number exceeds five color rats, a larger enclosure should be chosen, of course. The run should have several levels, so that the rat can climb and play in different places. However, the height of 80cm should not be exceeded, so that the color rat can not fall too low. Completely unsuitable for keeping color rats is an aquarium, because there the air quality suffers and heat and moisture can accumulate.

The different rat breedings

There are many different color rat breeds that have been created due to mutations or breeding techniques. Here are some of the most common color rat breeds:

  • Albino: Albino rats have white fur and red eyes. This is due to a mutation that makes it impossible for them to produce pigment. Hooded: Hooded rats have a white "hood" on their head and sometimes on their shoulders. Their body color can be white, black, brown, or some other color.
  • Berkshire: Berkshire rats have a white colored body area surrounding the rump and often visible on the chest. Rex: Rex rats have short, curly fur that gives them a fluffy appearance.
  • Satin: Satin rats have shiny, silky fur caused by a special gene mutation.
  • Russian Blue: Russian Blue rats have dark blue fur and dark eyes. There are many more color rat breeds, but these are some of the most common. It is important to note that some breedings, such as albino breeding and certain lines within Siamese breeding, may be associated with higher health risks.

Therefore, breeders should act responsibly and look out for the health and well-being of their animals.

How to train your color rats

Color rats as pets are very intelligent animals that need a lot of time and attention. They are able to learn different tricks and acquire new skills. It is important that you spend a lot of time with them. To become trusting they need a species-appropriate attitude and treats. The best way to give them treats is in the form of animal proteins. A good choice are mealworms or small fish.
