The majority of the meal-containing seeds are made up of fine grass seeds and small-grain pseudocereals such as amaranth or buckwheat. Buckwheat, for example, is rich in essential amino acids and protein. Buckwheat also contains many B vitamins and minerals such as iron.
Seeds should make up about 25 % of a degus' diet. As seeds are richer than plant ingredients, this mixture can be offered every other day. In a group with rather fatter degus, a "green food day" can be set aside once a week, when only fresh food is offered. This contains a lot of water, which regulates the amount of calories downwards without reducing the amount of food.
