Dwarf hamster base mix
The basic mix for dwarf hamsters is based on the kipi concept. The food is specially developed for dwarf hamsters prone to diabetes. Based on this basic mix, the food can be individually adapted to the hamster's needs. The mixture contains 70 % flour-containing seeds and 30 % oil-containing seeds.
Animal protein
Proteins, which are often given in the form of animal protein - i.e. insects - have been deliberately omitted from this mixture, as the oil-containing seeds already contain calcium and protein. As a rule of thumb, the higher the fat content of a grain or nut, the higher its protein and/or calcium content. Especially the smallest grains, such as sesame or poppy seeds, are true calcium and protein bundles. Even flour seeds and even grass seeds, which seem straw-like, contain high-quality proteins.
Grass seeds
A grass seed mixture (e.g. 20 g red fescue grass, 20 g cocksfoot grass, 20 g bluegrass) can be offered separately in parallel to the main feed. Simply scatter one to two teaspoons per week in the enclosure.
Nibbles
Every dwarf hamster especially loves dandelion roots, which they sometimes spend a little longer with. It should be available every day, as the inulin it contains not only helps the teeth but also the intestines.
Herbs & flowers
A potpourri of ribwort, nettle, chickweed, birch, hazelnut, lemon balm and above all dandelion leaves is suitable and relatively popular with dwarf hamsters. Stems such as parsley, celery or dill stalks also enjoy a certain popularity. A good mixture is 40 g dandelion leaves, 20 g ribwort plantain, 20 g nettle leaves and 10 g each of chickweed, birch or hazelnut leaves, lemon balm leaves and various stems.
Treats
Pumpkin, cucumber or hemp seeds can be given separately as treats to the dwarf hamster. Silver millet on the spike and flat ears are great fun to nibble and a nice activity. Sunflower and pine seeds may also be given, but not more than one seed per day.
