This feed mix contains 44,5 % floury seeds, 28 % oil seeds, 13,5 % vegetables, 12 % fruits and berries as well as 2 % herbs. Even if the Amazons are already overweight, the oil-containing seeds should not be completely omitted. These not only contain energy, but also provide the birds with essential fatty acids and vitamins. What is important here is variety and the right ratio to energy requirements.
Unfortunately, overweight is one of the most frequent causes of premature death in Amazons, especially when kept indoors. Overweight is by no means harmless, as it also causes diseases of the internal organs. Discolouration in the plumage usually indicates liver damage. If your bird is overweight and needs to lose weight, please do so slowly and in a controlled manner. In addition to an adapted diet, overweight birds or birds with a tendency to become overweight should be given more exercise. Please encourage parrots that are lazy to fly to fly more, so that the weight of your Amazons remains in balance.
